A First-Timer’s Guide to the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona
Each July, Pamplona transforms into the epicenter of celebration as thrill-seekers and bucket list checkers gather for one of Spain's most iconic festivals — San Fermin. From July 6 to 14, the city’s streets become the stage for a once-in-a-lifetime experience that blends cultural tradition with risky excitement. Whether you're dreaming of partaking in the run or simply want to witness the spectacle, here’s what every first-timer should know before heading to Pamplona.
The History Behind the Celebration
While today’s San Fermin Festival is globally recognized for the Running of the Bulls, its origins are steeped in tradition and religious history. The Running of the Bulls can be tracked all the way back to the 16th century, where it originally was a practical event needed to transport these intense creatures where they would herd bulls into the city for bullfights. Over time, this evolved into a wild party that still honors Saint Fermin, Pamplona’s patron saint, while making history each year.
Today, the festival features parades, fireworks, revelry, and, of course, the daring morning runs that draw both local and international participants, and ends up on bucket lists across the globe.
Understanding the Running of the Bulls
Every morning at 8:00 a.m. sharp, six bulls charge through the heart of Pamplona toward the Plaza de Toros, with runners navigating a tight chaotic course ahead of them.
For those brave enough to take part, here’s what to expect:
Getting in Position:
Runners typically gather near the starting point at Mercaderes Street, they also have the opportunity to choose where they will start, for the best advice on where to get started you can parktake in our Bull Route Tour where a famous runner will go over the history and safety of the run. Early arrival — ideally before 7:00 a.m. — is crucial to secure a spot and soak in the pre-run atmosphere.
The Course:
Stretching just under a kilometer, the route winds through narrow streets lined with barricades. Estafeta Street, a straight and relatively even portion, tends to be a popular starting point for newcomers.
The Signals:
Two loud rockets mark the start of the run, the first alerts runners that the bulls are on their way, and the second signals that all bulls have been released into the streets, so get ready to run!!
Safety First:
Speed and size make the bulls formidable. Instead of trying to outrun them the entire, it is best to focus on keeping ahead and knowing when it is time to safely exit the course. Touching or taunting the bulls is dangerous, against cultural norms, and also strictly prohibited.
Though the run itself lasts only a few minutes, those moments are among the most intense you’ll ever experience, and memories you will never forget.
Tips to Make the Most of San Fermin
While the bull run is undoubtedly the festival’s main draw, there’s much more to San Fermin. Here are some essential tips to help you prepare:
1. Book Early
Accommodation, restaurants, and reserving balcony spaces along the bull run route get snatched up months in advance. If you want access to the best views for the run or easy access to a multitude of festivities, plan ahead. You can book your bull run balcony rental, Pamplona hotel, guided tours in Pamplona, and bullifght tickets directly on our site.

These will ensure you have an expert helping you plan your trip along the way and take some of the stress off of you so you do not have to book each event separately or deal with some of the more difficult things like the language barrier in Spain.
2. Dress the Part
White clothing paired with a red sash and bandana are festival staples. While optional, wearing them connects you to the spirit of San Fermin and makes for memorable photos. If you don’t have these in your wardrobe we do offer the uniform that includes the shirt, bandana, and scarf!
3. Expect Crowds
With more than a million attendees flocking to Pamplona, expect dense crowds and packed venues. Stay aware of your surroundings and stick with your group if possible. If you have kids this is the ideal time to carry them and hold them close, as to not take chances of them getting lost in the crowd.
4. Plan for Dining
Pamplona’s food scene comes alive during the festival, but restaurants fill up quickly, with many locals making reservations ahead of time! Make reservations when you can. For a seamless experience, we recommend advance restaurant bookings — including options at exclusive and even Michelin-starred establishments that we can book for you!
5. Know Your Transport Options
Parking is virtually nonexistent during the fiesta. The city becomes pedestrian-focused, so public transit and rideshare options are your best bet, along with some hotels which provide free transit to certain events.
6. Witness the Bullfights
Each evening, the Plaza de Toros hosts bullfights, an integral part of the celebration. While controversial, these performances are deeply rooted in local tradition and can offer a never before seen experience to newcomers! Many different tickets are offered, depending on your seating preference. Check under Bullfights on our site for exclusive Pamplona bullfight tickets, but keep in mind they sell out quickly so make sure you get them before they are gone! The Plaza de Toros does require physical tickets, so when you purchase them, we will send you instructions on how to pick them up once you are in Pamplona!
7. Enjoy the Non-Stop Festivities
From parades to fireworks and constant parties, the festival fun stays active 24/7 during the entirety of the Fiesta!. Join locals and visitors alike as the city lights up with a never ending celebration!
